The concert bands are the core of the band curriculum at Glenbrook North. GBN offers three curricular concert bands that meet during school. These ensembles focus on the preparation of high-quality wind band repertoire and students spend time developing ensemble performance skills including blend/balance, tone quality, intonation, and musicianship.
Freshman Band: The Freshman Band is comprised of all 9th grade students in the GBN Band program. Emphasis is put on unification of performance techniques between students coming from different schools and on continued development of basic performing and ensemble skills on intermediate-level music. The Freshman Band performs in concerts in GBN’s Center for the Performing Arts, as well as each Spring at a Concert Band Festival in the area.
Symphonic Band: GBN’s Symphonic Band serves as an intermediate performing ensemble for Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. This ensemble is open to any student, and focuses on the preparation and performance of high quality intermediate wind band repertoire. Students perform in concerts in GBN’s Center for the Performing Arts, as well as each Spring at a Concert Band Festival in the area.
Symphonic Wind Ensemble: The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is made up of students who exemplify the highest standards of musicianship. This ensemble is audition based, and open to students who are Sophomores through Seniors. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble plays advanced wind band repertoire, including collegiate level music. In addition to performances in concerts at school, the SWE regularly participates in the IHSA Organizational Contest in the Spring, and on multiple occasions has been invited to perform at the University of Illinois’ “SuperState” Festival.
